A towering presence in the centre of defence, Luisao will be looking to get the nod to partner captain Lucio in Brazil's backline.
Luisao was part of the 2006 squad in Germany, but he did not feature in any games as Juan slotted in alongside Lucio as Brazil bowed out at the quarter-final stage.
Juan is again Luisao's rival for a place in the 2010 team, although the Benfica defender will be hoping his appearance in last summer's Confederations Cup final against the USA will sway coach Dunga.
The 29-year-old, who made his Brazil debut against Honduras in 2001 and appeared in that year's Under-20 World Cup, has spent the past seven years in Portugal with Benfica.
He won the cup in 2004, the Portuguese league title 12 months later and also scored the winner against Liverpool in the first leg of a last-16 UEFA Champions League tie in 2006.
A scorer in the 2004 Copa America final against Argentina, an impressive showing at the World Cup could lead to Luisao being offered the chance to move to a bigger stage at club level.
