The Haarlem-born shot-stopper is Ajax's number one and he is now starting to make the Holland goalkeeping jersey his own.
The 27-year-old came through the youth ranks at The Amsterdam Arena and is now one of the most highly-rated keepers in Europe.
Stekelenburg made his Ajax debut in 2002 and just a couple of years later he was capped for the first time.
But Stekelenburg's progress has been hampered by the presence of Edwin van der Sar.
The Manchester United ace, though, has recently retired from international football - which has opened the way for Stekelenburg to make the spot his own.
Van der Sar was used sparingly during the qualifiers which gave Stekelenburg the chance to play in five of the games for the 2010 World Cup.
He had a positive showing with three clean-sheets and five victories.
